On September 6, the Supreme Court abolished Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, decriminalizing gay sex in India. This brought joy not just to the LGBTQ+ community but to the entire nation, as everyone witnessed this historic judgement.
In the seventh edition of Hijra Habba, a yearly gathering of LGBTQ+ community and supporters, veteran cricketer Gautam Gambhir stole the show and everyone’s heart with his gesture.
Gambhir, who inaugurated the event, donned a saree and sported a bindi to show his support to the transgender community.
“It’s not about being a man or a woman. It’s about being a HUMAN,” he tweeted.
Hijra Habba aims at celebrating being a part of the LGBTQ+ Community and empower them to fight against social injustices unitedly. The seventh edition of the event was held on Tuesday at a Delhi Mall by the HIV/AIDS Alliance India. There theme of the event was ‘Born This Way’.
After six years, the recent edition was overwhelming for all the members of the community after the Supreme Court’s verdict. Moreover, Gambhir’s presence also boosted the morale of the community and motivated them to be their way.
“I am really happy that section 377 has been scrapped and I want to congratulate everyone for this judgement. I am supporting them (the community) and the cause of this event, which is to accept the community as they are. One thing I can assure that we can’t grow and move forward without involving anyone. They are as Indians as we are and should be treated with dignity and respect,” Gambhir said at the event.
Once again, Gambhir has given us a reason to love him with his heart warming gesture. By standing up for equal rights, he has shown that people do not become different by looking or presenting themselves in a different way.
